KB's first foreign coach touched the players' hearts
Expectations are high.
Men's professional volleyball KB Insurance hired a foreign coach for the first time after the end of this season. It is directed by Miguel Rivera. On the 28th, Coach Miguel, who met at the KB Insurance Injaenium in Suwon, the players' dormitory, said, "I talked to the players first. I want to grow together and play volleyball with no regrets," his eyes sparkling.
Coach Miguel served as a power analyst for the Spanish women's national volleyball team in 2009 and as head coach of the Spanish men's national volleyball team from 2014 to 2021, and has served as coach of the Spanish men's national team since 2022. He performed well in Europe, where many of the world's best players were present, and quickly raised Spain's ranking in the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) from 49th at the time of his appointment to 33rd.
In addition, while serving as the head coach of the Spanish men's national team, he led the Spanish men's professional volleyball team 'Club Voleibol Teruel' and won the regular league and championship twice (2017-2018 season, 2018-2019 season), Won the Spanish Cup twice (2018, 2020) and the Spanish Super Cup for 5 consecutive years (2016-2020). The team was changed to a prestigious club.
Coach Miguel is good at building a structured, advanced volleyball system based on data based on his excellent data analysis and utilization skills. He led all the teams he guided to the top through efficient training.
This time he was in charge of KB Insurance. He joined the squad after entering the country on the 12th. Coach Miguel, who met on the 28th, said, "It's my first time coming to Korea, and I'm very excited. I'm really grateful to KB Insurance for contacting me. I'm grateful once again for trusting me among the many candidates. It's an honor to come to the V-League. In any case, “I will do my best to help KB Insurance grow,” he said.
What made you decide to come to Korea? Coach Miguel said, "I knew very well about the V-League. I saw Spanish players playing," and "I know former Korean women's volleyball team coach Cesar Hernández González, so I heard a lot about the Korean league. He recommended it as a good challenge for me. “I was able to make a decision,” he said.
I also had many conversations with foreign player Andres Villena, who experienced the V-League first. In the Spanish national team, coach Miguel served as the head coach and Villena served as the captain. Viyena worked for Korean Air in the 2019-2020 season and 2020-2021 season, and has been with KB Insurance since last season.
Coach Miguel said, "I was in constant contact with Villena even before the offer came from KB Insurance. She was having a difficult season this year and was having a hard time mentally, so I tried to help her mentally," and added, "I also asked Villena a lot about her life in Korea. “It was a great help in challenging the V-League,” he explained.
After joining KB Insurance, I conducted finishing training with the players. There are some aspects that are more important than training. Coach Miguel said, "I had face-to-face meetings with the players. I spent a lot of time talking to each and every one of them. I thought it was more important to get to know them as a person rather than getting to know them as a player. I met with every player individually and talked to them. “I heard it,” he said.
He added, "The most important thing for me was meeting with the players. The players' first impression was very positive. It must have been difficult due to poor performance this season. The players actively participated in the meeting and said they wanted to change." He added, "Everyone had an open mind. It was nice that everyone could freely express their opinions."
This season, KB Insurance ranked last with 5 wins, 31 losses, and 21 points. It was the first last place finish in the club's history. What part should be improved first? Coach Miguel said, “The fact that a team only won 5 games means that everyone is responsible. It is not the fault of a specific player or position, but that everyone as a whole must work hard.” He added, “We confirmed that they were ranked 6th or 7th in most indicators. “We need to raise all the numbers,” he emphasized.
Do you feel any pressure to lead the team to a leap forward? Coach Miguel said, "I always try to achieve the best results, and I feel the pressure that comes with it. One thing that has been good since taking office at KB Insurance is that the players themselves say they need to grow," and added, "All we can do right now is to do our best. "There must be trust between the players and the coach. The coach must trust the players' efforts, and the players must trust the coach's instructions and tactics. That is how I want to move forward together," he said, raising his voice.
