Long, 69 holes ‘consecutive fairway landings’… PGA Tour record
Adam Long (USA) set a new record for ‘most consecutive fairways landed’ on the PGA Tour.
Long played the 14th hole (par 4) in the first round of the PGA Tour Butterfield Bermuda Championship (total prize money of $6.5 million) held at the Port Royal Golf Course (par 71, 6,828 yards) in Southampton, Bermuda on the 10th (Korean time). All tee shots in 11 par 4 and par 5 holes were sent into the fairway.
Long, whose tee shot never left the fairway in a total of 58 par 4 holes and par 5 holes from the 17th hole in the final round of the Shriners Children's Open last month until the end of the World Wide Technology Championship last week, added 11 holes that day to reach 69 holes. He set a new PGA Tour record of consecutive tee shots landing on the fairway.
According to the PGA Tour, the previous record was 59 holes left by Brian Klar (USA) in 1992.
Long, who surpassed Klar's record by 10 points, missed the fairway at the 15th hole (par 4) in the first round and stopped his record streak.
“I wouldn’t have thought about it this much (about the record) if everyone hadn’t come up to me and told me in the last 24 hours. It’s definitely been on my mind since I started,” Long said.
He said, "In the 15th hole, my 3-wood tee shot had a lot of rotation, and it got caught in the wind and didn't go far enough, so it fell into the rough. I was a little relieved that that part was over."
Long never left the fairway in 14 par 4 and par 5 holes during the 4 rounds of the World Wide Technology Championship, achieving a '100% fairway landing rate in one tournament' for the first time in 31 years since he closed at the 1992 Memorial Tournament. .
Long, who shot a 5-under-par 66 without a bogey in the first round of the day, was in the top 20 with 9 players unable to finish the game until sunset.
Alex Noren (Sweden), who swept 11 birdies and avoided one bogey, took the sole lead (10 under par, 61 strokes), and Robert Garrigas (USA) was 2 strokes behind in second place (8 under par, 63 strokes).
Adam Scott (Australia) and Akshay Bhatia (USA) are in the top 10 with 6 under par and 65 strokes.
Korea's Noh Seung-yeol is in the middle of the rankings with 2 under par and 69 strokes, while Kang Seong-hoon ranks only in 100th place with 1 over par and 72 strokes.
