Not participating in the LG camp in Arizona...
Infielder Son Ho-young (30), who was named to the Korean Series entry list last year and was highly anticipated for the 2024 season, will no longer be able to accompany the LG Twins to their U.S. spring camp.
With the spring training schedules of the 10 KBO league teams approaching, Son Ho-young of the LG Twins was excluded from the spring training roster in Arizona, USA due to an injury. In addition, outfielder Ahn Ik-hoon (28) will also not be able to participate in the Arizona spring camp due to a side muscle injury.
There is bound to be a lot of disappointment not only for Son Ho-young but also for the LG team. Infielder Son Ho-young, a former Chicago Cubs player, was selected by the LG Twins as the 23rd overall pick in the third round of the 2020 rookie draft.
Son Ho-young is a player with many stories. After graduating from Pyeongchon Middle School, he went to Anyang Chunghun High School and played on the Hongik University baseball team. He subsequently dropped out of college during his first year of college, then signed a minor contract with the Chicago Cubs in 2014 and left for the United States.
However, Son Ho-young was released by the Cubs in March 2017 without realizing his dream of making his big league debut. For the Chicago Cubs, he played in 65 games between the Rookie League and Single A over two seasons from 2014 to 2015. His minor league career batting average was 0.238 (46 hits in 193 at-bats). He had 7 doubles, 17 RBI, 27 runs scored, and 16 stolen bases. His two-season career OPS (on-base percentage + slugging percentage) was 0.605.
After completing his military service, Son Ho-young joined the independent baseball team Yeoncheon Miracle in 2019. And he was nominated by the LG Twins ahead of the 2020 season. In accordance with overseas regulations, he spent his first season earning an annual salary of 27 million won without a contract deposit.
Son Ho-young, who played in 8 games in the 2021 season, posted a batting average of 0.257 (19 hits in 74 at-bats), 3 home runs, 14 RBIs, a slugging percentage of 0.432, and an on-base percentage of 0.309 in 36 games in the 2022 season. Last season, in 27 games, he had a batting average of 0.205 (9 hits in 44 at-bats), 1 home run, 6 RBI, 8 runs, 2 stolen bases, a slugging percentage of 0.273, and an on-base percentage of 0.222. In particular, he was included in the Korean Series entry list and was able to obtain a championship ring.
However, injuries always hindered his career. In August 2022, he was ruled out for the season after suffering a fractured metacarpal bone in his right hand. Additionally, ahead of the start of the 2023 season, he suffered a hamstring injury and suffered a regret.
LG has a healthy infield consisting of Oh Ji-hwan, Shin Min-jae, Moon Bo-kyung, and Austin. However, as Kim Min-seong transferred to the Lotte Giants through a sign-and-trade that day, the need for a backup infielder became even greater, and Son Ho-young was one of the candidates. However, as the team failed to join the Arizona camp in the U.S. this year, both the individual and the team had no choice but to swallow their disappointment again.
