KIA director Kim Jong-guk 'suspicion of receiving bribes'

The arrest of KIA Tigers coach Kim Jong-kook and former general manager Jang Jeong-seok, who are suspected of receiving bribes from the team's sponsor, will be decided as early as this afternoon.

At 10:30 a.m. on the 29th, the Seoul Central District Court will conduct a pre-arrest interrogation (warrant review) of those suspected of breach of trust. The hearing will be handled by Chief Judge Yoo Chang-hoon in charge of warrants.

The two are suspected of receiving money from a coffee company that sponsors the KIA Tigers. It is known that Coach Kim received tens of millions of won in bribes, and former General Manager Jang received tens of millions of won and intervened in the process of selecting a sponsor for the club.

It is known that the prosecution confirmed additional charges while investigating the case of former general manager Jang's 'request for bribes from players', which was requested by the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) to be investigated. Previously, the KBO requested an investigation from the prosecution in April last year after receiving a report that former general manager Jang had demanded kickbacks from catcher Park Dong-won during the negotiation process. It is reported that on November 30 of the same year, the prosecution conducted a search and seizure of former leader Jang's residence and discovered that he had received money from a sponsoring company.

Previously, the Seoul Central District Prosecutor's Office's Major Crime Investigation Department (Chief Prosecutor Lee Il-gyu) requested an arrest warrant for them on the 24th on charges of breach of trust.

This is the first time that an arrest warrant has been requested for a current manager of a domestic professional baseball team on charges of personal corruption. The KIA club suspended coach Kim from his duties on the 28th.
