How should KIA, the 'home of portraits', resolve it?

The prosecution additionally uncovered suspicions of manager Kim's breach of trust during the investigation after receiving a request from the KBO to investigate allegations that former general manager Jang demanded kickbacks from catcher Park Dong-won in 2022. The prosecution announced that it had requested arrest warrants for Director Kim and former Director Jang at the same time.

It was known that former general manager Jang demanded kickbacks while negotiating a multi-year contract with Park Dong-won, who was acquired through a trade in 2022. He requested money from Park Dong-won on two occasions, and Park Dong-won recorded this and reported it to the Players' Association, which was revealed. 

In the end, General Manager Jang was dismissed, and after reviewing the KIA team's police report and related materials, the KBO requested an investigation by the prosecution in April. And when the investigation had progressed for about 9 months, additional charges of breach of trust were discovered against former Director Jang, and during the investigation, former Director Jang and Director Kim Jong-guk were found to have an arrest warrant at the same time. 

Breach of trust is a crime that applies when a person receives an unfair request for work and takes a financial advantage. Coach Kim and former general manager Jang are reportedly suspected of receiving bribes worth 100 million won and tens of millions of won, respectively, from a coffee company that is a sponsor of the KIA Tigers. It was confirmed that this company gave money and valuables to Coach Kim on several occasions for help in signing a sponsorship agreement with the KIA Tigers.

The KIA team said in a press release on the 28th, "On the 25th, we confirmed that coach Kim Jong-guk was under investigation by the investigative authorities, and this was finally confirmed during a meeting with coach Kim Jong-guk on the 27th."  

He continued, "The club determined that he could not perform his duties normally as a manager while the investigation was ongoing, so he suspended his duties. The manager's final course of action will be decided after observing the investigation situation, and the first team's spring camp will be held under head coach Jin Gap-yong. “We plan to proceed with the system,” he added. At that time, it was only known as a suspicion of bribery. And the club became aware of the investigation through an external tip, not a report from coach Kim Jong-guk. 

And when the news of the arrest warrant request became known on the 29th, the KIA club decided to fire coach Kim Jong-guk regardless of whether he was arrested or not. The club said, 'KIA, which suspended coach Kim Jong-guk on the 28th, confirmed through its own investigation today that coach Kim Jong-guk is currently a suspect and is being investigated by the prosecution on charges of 'breach of trust.' Regardless of the outcome, the decision was made to terminate the contract with director Kim Jong-guk, as it was judged to be an 'act damaging to dignity'.' Afterwards, he even issued an apology and bowed his head.

On the 22nd, KIA held a strategy seminar attended by CEO Choi Jun-young, general manager Shim Jae-hak, and first and second team coaching staff, including coach Kim Jong-guk. It was just three days before the KIA club became aware of the prosecution investigation into coach Kim. 

At this event, CEO Choi said, “It was a meaningful event where all the coaching staff thought about and discussed their respective roles under one goal: winning the championship. “We will spare no effort in providing all support so that the coaching staff and front office can closely collaborate and communicate so that the players can perform at their best,” he said, conveying the team’s message regarding the win.
