“It was a shame” Kiwoom Kim Jae-woong, who recovered last year… Let go of ‘greed’

Kiwoom Heroes pitcher Kim Jae-woong (26) had a strong desire to pitch better last year than in the 2022 season, when he achieved his best performance since his debut. However, due to his high motivation, he experienced unexpected ups and downs. As he enters the new season, he is putting aside his 'greed' and focusing his mind to achieve his goal.

Kim Jae-woong appeared in 65 games in the 2022 season, pitched 62⅔ innings, and showed great success with 3 wins, 2 losses, 13 saves, 27 holds, and an ERA of 2.01, becoming a relief pitcher representing the team. He tied for third place in holds and had the honor of being selected as an All-Star for the first time in his debut.

Kim Jae-woong, who took the mound in the 9th inning and recorded 13 saves, was selected as the closing pitcher ahead of last season. However, he showed signs of instability in May, recording an earned run average of 5.91. Afterwards, even though he returned to his familiar position as a setup man, he showed off uneven pitching and at one point his ERA soared to 5.83.

Kim Jae-woong, who regained his condition in September, pitched 10⅔ innings without allowing a run in 10 games, and also posted a good ERA of 2.08 in October. The 2023 season ended with 67 games, 2 wins, 3 losses, 6 saves, 18 holds, and an ERA of 4.22.

In a recent phone call with Newsis, Kim Jae-woong looked back and said, "Last year was disappointing. I always wanted to get good results and do well, but I was greedy. I thought too much about doing well from the start of the season."

Kim Jae-woong pitched a fight, playing more than 60 games and 59 innings for two consecutive years. Despite his frequent appearances on the mound, Kim Jae-woong did not feel any physical strain last year. He said, "There were no physical problems. I prepared well after the 2022 season, so my physical condition was better last year, but I was greedy."

Currently, Jaewoong Kim is focusing on his personal training and building his body. Starting on the 1st of next month, he will begin to improve his pitching condition in earnest at the team's spring camp. Kim Jae-woong said, "Because the season starts earlier this year, I need to improve my condition quickly and try to be careful of injuries," and added, "I need to adapt well to the Automatic Pitching System (ABS). I want to increase my speed if possible." explained.

Kiwoom will be playing this season without Lee Jeong-hoo (26), who has been the team's leading hitter for seven years, and native ace Ahn Woo-jin (25). Lee Jung-hoo successfully entered the big league by signing a contract with the San Francisco Giants of the U.S. Major League Baseball in December of last year, and Ahn Woo-jin began military service as a social worker in December of last year after elbow surgery.

However, Jaewoong Kim is not afraid of big changes in his team. This is because he believes in the potential of the team, which achieved good results despite harsh external evaluations.

Kim Jae-woong said, "I know that the team's strength this season is not being evaluated well. In this situation, we achieved good results. I hope the players see this as an opportunity and do well together to play fall baseball." “I want to do better this year than last year, but I won’t be greedy. I want to throw consistently without getting injured,” he said.
