Detroit, 'money cushion' for minor league prospects.
Detroit of the American professional baseball Major League (MLB) signed a large contract with a minor league prospect.
On the 29th (Korean time), MLB.com reported, "Detroit signed a six-year contract with minor league infielder Colt Keith worth $28.6425 million (about 38.3 billion won)."
Keith, who is likely to be included in the opening lineup of the big league this season, will receive an annual salary of $2.5 million (approximately 3.3 billion won) and a contract bonus of $2 million (2.7 billion won) this year.
The annual salary for the 2025 season is $3.5 million (about 4.7 billion won), the 2026 and 2027 seasons are $4 million each (about 5.4 billion won), and the 2028 and 2029 seasons are $5 million (about 6.7 billion won).
Club options and escalator provisions from 2030 to 2032 are included. Therefore, this contract can increase in value to up to $82 million (KRW 109.7 billion) over 9 years.
MLB.com said, “This is the largest contract Detroit has signed with a player who has not made his big league debut.”
Keith was selected by Detroit in the 5th round of the 2020 amateur draft. Keith, a left-handed hitter who plays second and third base, was very active in the minor leagues last year.
He batted .325 with 14 home runs and 50 RBI in 59 Double-A games, then appeared in 67 games in Triple-A starting in late June, hitting .287 with 13 home runs and 51 RBI. He was also selected as a minor league All-Star.
