Aaron Hicks signs minimum salary contract with Angels.

Veteran switch-hitting outfielder Aaron Hicks (34) has found a new contract.

Local media such as 'ESPN' quoted sources on the 30th (Korean time) and reported that Hicks had agreed to a contract with the LA Angels.

The contract size is $740,000, the minimum annual salary in the major leagues.

The reason he receives so little money and goes to a new team is because he still has an existing contract.

Previously, he had agreed to a 7-year, $70 million contract with the New York Yankees until 2025. Although he was released by the Yankees midway through last season, this contract is still in effect.

He is scheduled to receive $9.5 million in 2024 and 2025, plus a buyout amount of $1 million.

Excluding the minimum salary level that the Angels will pay, the Yankees will still be responsible for approximately $19 million.

The Yankees took on this financial burden and released Hicks last year. Because his grades were so miserable. In 28 games, he only had a batting average of .188, an on-base percentage of .263, and a slugging percentage of .261.

Afterwards, he signed with the same district team, the Baltimore Orioles, and showed slightly better performance. In 65 games, he had a batting average of 0.275, an on-base percentage of 0.381, a slugging percentage of 0.425, 7 home runs, and 31 RBIs.

He was a better player before. He hit 60 home runs and hit 8.7 bWAR with an OPS of 0.819 in 338 games from 2017 to 2020.

The fact that he can play center field as a switch hitter is a big advantage. The Angels recruited a proven center fielder in a situation where the health of starting center fielder Mike Trout could not be guaranteed.

Regarding this, Angels general manager Perry Minassian said in an interview with local media such as AP, “Trout is our center fielder. Hicks is a player who will help the team in many different ways. “He will add to his presence as a veteran,” he said, emphasizing that the addition of Hicks does not mean Trout’s position will change.

ESPN commented that the Angels' acquisition of Hicks left room to use other outfielders as trade cards.
