There is also a ‘Baseball Convention’ in Korea

Coaches from professional baseball listen to the story of a writer who gave up baseball in high school. A former prospect who failed to blossom in the professional ranks reveals his aspirations, saying, “I want to become a coordinator for a professional team.” Even though no one asked them to do so, they collect tracking data from youth baseball players and share it generously.

There is baseball outside of professional baseball. The '2023 Cheongdam Lion Orthopedics Woori Baseball Convention' held at the Olympic Parktel in Songpa-gu, Seoul on the 1st and 2nd was an opportunity for those who love baseball to share their experiences, knowledge, and hearts with each other through 19 sessions. It was an even more interesting time to hear the stories of youth coaches, power analysts, scouts, and training coaches rather than broadcasters, managers, or star players who had monopolized the right to speak about baseball in Korea. The participants also went through the two-day schedule with the same mindset.

The event was held by Choi Seung-pyo, the father of Dodgers prospect Choi Hyun-il and CEO of ‘Coach Round.’ CEO Seungpyo Choi, who has been holding the Woori Baseball Convention for four years since 2020, pointed out, “Half of the participants are coaches, and the other half are parents and student players.” The leaders’ affiliations also varied. Academy coaches and professional club coaches interacted naturally. Dr. Kim Byeong-gon, who was also Ryu Hyun-jin's conditioning coach, smiled and said, "It's nice to see the players who were with the club." Samsung general training coach Jeong Yeon-chang also had a conversation with former general manager Kim Jong-moon, Choi Geum-gang (water safe coach) and Lim Chang-min (FA), whom he had a relationship with during his NC days.

On the 1st, the event opened with NC assistant batting coach Jeon Min-soo's announcement, 'If you give up your swing, your batting will improve.' CEO Choi Seung-pyo said, “Coaches who had a lot of worries during their time as players study baseball more diligently,” and introduced coach Jeon Min-soo, who retired at a young age and transformed into a coach.

Coach Jeon Min-soo emphasized the importance of 'metacognition' and said, "Son Ah-seop is a player who knows his own tendencies well. He said that once he decides to swing, he cannot stop. That's why he says there are times when the bat goes out on a ball that he doesn't think he can hit. But that's the case. "He knows his tendencies well and analyzes them more diligently. Park Min-woo is the type of person who knows that hitting a high ball will result in bad results, so he chooses a low ball and tries to hit it," he said. Although it was early in the morning when they had not yet woken up, the youth players became more focused on the presentation as episodes of famous professional baseball players appeared.

'Diego Baseball' Jeong Dae-seong, who worked in Lotte and the national team's power analysis team, attracted attention by introducing tracking data of youth players collected with Rapsodo. At the same time, he said that child players who have just started playing baseball may find the four-seam fastball grip awkward, so he introduced the 'three-finger fastball', which uses the ring finger as well, and many youth coaches showed interest in this. He also shared his experience, saying that there are cases where it is already being used in the field.

Youth players also participated in the event, holding the hands of their fathers and mothers. Yang Ji-woong (14), a first-year student at Dajeong Middle School in Sejong City, visited Seoul with his mother for a two-day, one-night stay. He said, "It's fun. It was nice to see people I had only seen on YouTube in real life and to learn things I didn't know before." The most impressive session was the last session of the 1st, SSG defensive coach Lee Dae-su's 'Batting balls and runners that are getting faster, defensive practice that needs to change'.

The first presentation on the second day was by writer Ahn Hyeon (Ahn Hyeon-seop), who played baseball until his first year of high school, retired early, and entered Korea University through the CSAT. He started playing baseball with the goal of becoming a major leaguer after watching Chan-ho Park, but had to give up his dream early after failing to recover after elbow surgery. He began studying for the CSAT in his second year of high school and entered the Department of Physical Education at Korea University.

But in fact, writer Ahn Hyeon said that he was not a ‘studying baseball player.’ He confessed that in elementary school, he started playing baseball and distanced himself from his studies, and that in his second year of high school, he started studying by memorizing the multiplication tables. He said, "Rehabilitation was fun. Unlike baseball training, which I just did because I was told to do it, I was interested in rehabilitation because it had a scientific reason. I wanted to study physical education science based on my rehabilitation experience, so I studied it." After working as a teacher and now working as a writer and creator, he said, “The experience of playing baseball helped me grow.”
