Milwaukee pursues long-term contract with 19-year-old outfield prospect who played in 6 Triple-A games
The Milwaukee Brewers are pursuing an unprecedented contract with a promising player.
'The Athletic' quoted a source on the 29th (Korean time) and reported that the Brewers are pursuing a long-term contract with Venezuelan prospect Jackson Churio (19).
Churio, a native of Venezuela, appeared in 272 games over three seasons in the minor league, hitting 0.286, on-base percentage 0.347, slugging percentage 0.490, 47 home runs, 191 RBI, and 68 stolen bases.
In the 2023 season, he played 122 games in Double A and 6 games in Triple A. He appeared in 128 games for both teams, batting average of .283, on-base percentage of .338, slugging percentage of .467, 22 home runs, 91 RBI, and 44 stolen bases.
He will turn 20 in March next year and has only played 6 games in Triple A, but he is evaluated as a top prospect in the league.
He ranked in the top 10 in the 2023 preseason league prospect rankings selected by leading media such as Baseball America (3rd) and MLB.com (8th), and participated in the Futures Game for two consecutive years in 2022 and 2023.
In the past, there have been cases of the Major League signing long-term contracts with prospects without even a single game of Major League experience.
John Singleton (Houston), Scott Kingery (Philadelphia), Iloy Jimenez, Luis Robert (White Sox), and Evan White (Seattle) signed such contracts.
Among them, the player who signed the largest contract is Roberto, who signed a six-year, $50 million contract in January 2020.
Churio's contract with the Brewers is expected to surpass this contract and become the largest ever.
The Athletic predicted that this contract would have a large impact, saying, "It is a contract that will affect Milwaukee's offseason direction and 2024 roster composition."
If the contract is formalized, Churio will be free from the application of service time. There is no justification for the Brewers to exclude him from the opening roster.
Milwaukee already has three outfielders under the age of 25 in Sal Frelick, Joey Wimmer, and Garrett Mitchell. The addition of another prospect will add to the player base and at the same time increase the possibility of using existing outfield resources as trade cards.
