'Interested in Lee Jeong-hoo' MLB Yankees acquire outfielder Verdugo through trade
The New York Yankees of the Major League Baseball (MLB) acquired outfielder Alex Verdugo through a trade.
MLB.com, the official MLB website, said on the 6th (Korean time), "The Yankees acquired Verdugo through a 1-3 trade with the rival Boston Red Sox. Verdugo was traded for right-handed pitchers Richard Pitts, Greg Wysert, and Nicholas Giudice. “It’s done,” he said.
Trades between traditional rivals the Yankees and Boston are extremely rare. According to MLB.com, this is the eighth trade between the two teams since 1969.
The Yankees, who were in dire need of outfield reinforcements, brought in Verdugo despite the loss of a pitching prospect. He has decent hitting ability and the strength to play all outfield positions.
Verdugo, who played for the LA Dodgers and Boston, recorded a batting average of 0.281, 654 hits, 57 home runs, 255 RBIs, and an OPS (on-base percentage + slugging percentage) of 0.765 in 651 games over 7 seasons. He played 142 games this year with a batting average of 0.264, 144 hits, 13 home runs, and 54 RBIs, with an OPS of 0.745.
The Yankees, who are known to be interested in Lee Jung-hoo, are looking to recruit additional outfielders. MLB.com assessed that bringing in Verdugo did not affect the recruitment of Juan Soto (San Diego Padres) or Cody Bellinger.
This winter, the Yankees are showing great interest in a Soto trade. If the Yankees join hands with Soto, there is a high possibility that interest in Lee Jung-hoo will disappear.
At the end of last month, the New York Post, an American media outlet, reported that 20 MLB teams were interested in Lee Jung-hoo. In addition to the Yankees, San Diego, the San Francisco Giants, and the New York Mets are being mentioned as teams that have entered the race to recruit Lee Jung-hoo.
