A bold challenge from a rookie with a batting average of 100%, will he be able to approach the ‘post-Roh Jin-hyuk’?

“If I get the chance, I want to play shortstop again.”

Lotte Giants rookie infielder Jeong Dae-seon (19) debuted in the first team this year and had many opportunities to play as a starter in September. There was a reason why his main players were injured, but in a situation where the team was chasing the hope of finishing in the top 5 until the end, Jeong Dae-seon did not give up and played his best. Although his performance did not match, it was a meaningful season for Jeong Dae-seon.

He had a batting average of .105 (6-for-40), 6 RBI, and an OPS of .392 in 19 games this year. Although he showed flashes from time to time, there was no performance that left a strong impression. Even during his amateur days, he mainly played shortstop and third base, but after joining the pros and playing second base in the Futures League, he developed a sense of the game. He was always considered the best-rated player in the Futures League and even made his first-team debut a success. His future performance in 69 games was a batting average of .

Dae-sun Jeong, who graduated from three commercials and was drafted 43rd overall in the fifth round of this year's rookie draft, actually raised his stock right before his pro nomination. Last year, at the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-18 Baseball World Cup held in Florida, USA, he served as the national team's starting third baseman and displayed explosive performance with a batting average of .625 (10 hits in 16 at-bats), 1 home run, 10 RBIs, and an OPS of 1.667. . In the game against Canada, he hit a hard hit, including a grand slam. Due to these performances, he was included in the 'All World Team', the top member by position in the competition. Dae-seon Jeong was selected as the best third baseman in the tournament.

Although my position in the pros was different, I had a valuable time gaining new experiences. Although his performance in the first team was not as good as he had hoped, he was not disappointed with his performance. Jeong Dae-seon said, “There were many disappointing days and many good days, but I think there were more good days. “He received many opportunities in the second team and played quite a bit in the first team,” he said, laughing, adding, “There was trial and error, but I still had more happy days.”

He was a player who received more attention for his hitting than his defense. However, he eventually ran into the limitations of the first team. He said, “It went well at first. He felt good too. However, as the pace gradually dropped in the second half, I think my desire to do well had the opposite effect,” he explained. “If I play in the first team next year, I want to do better next year based on the thoughts I had this year.”

Even in defense, he does not hide his desire to return to his original position. He is currently improving his defensive skills by taking interest in defensive training with coach Kim Min-ho. He said, “I’m trying to focus better because you gave me detailed information. Defense has become a lot more fun recently. “So, I think I want to work harder and do well in defense,” he explained. “He taught me footwork, new techniques, and steps well, so I’ll try to emulate them as much as possible.”

And, “There is no pressure on the throwing part at second base, but personally, I would like to see a shortstop. I am also greedy because I have seen a lot of shortstops and third basemen. “If I get the chance, I want to do well at shortstop and third base again,” he said, without hiding his motivation.

In the end, he came to the conclusion that he needs to be competitive in defense to get more first-team opportunities, and he is putting this into practice. He said, “I have a strength in catching. “Both the 2nd and 1st teams made no mistakes in catching,” he said. “All teams must play good defense to win the game. “You think the same way, so I’m trying to play good defense,” he explained.

I know that I need to maintain my strengths in catching and improve on throwing. Jeong Dae-seon's goal for this year's off-season is to increase his power, whether in attack or defense. He said, “I thought a lot that my strength in hitting was definitely weak. “I also thought I needed a strong throw,” he said, adding, “I did a lot of weight training during the off-season and my throwing strength seems to be weak, so I want to focus on building my shoulders so that I can make strong throws.”

Currently, the starting shortstop for Lotte's first team is Noh Jin-hyuk (35), who was recruited as a free agent. It is time to think slowly even after Noh Jin-hyuk. Jeong Dae-seon may also be focusing on defensive training in preparation for the era following Noh Jin-hyuk. There are still three years left on Noh Jin-hyuk's free agent contract, but the club has no choice but to prepare for the 'post'.

He said, “I saw a lot of seniors in he first team who were said to be good at hitting. “I thought I wanted to do just as well,” he said. “But you have to be good at defense to survive in the first team for a long time.” “The bat is important, but I think defense is also really important,” he said emphatically.

First of all, the starting lineup in the infield is relatively solid. The shortstop position must always be concerned about the risk of Noh Jin-hyuk's back injury. At second base is free agent Ahn Chi-hong, and Ko Seung-min is receiving second base infield training. Han Dong-hee and Kim Min-soo are considered candidates for the third baseman position. However, this does not mean that there is no room for Jeong Dae-sun to dig in. If the bold ambition can turn into reality, it could have a ripple effect on the previously static infield competition.
